Se cumplen 13 años desde que Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann se estrenó. Es el debut de Hiroyuki Imaishi como director en su primera serie TV y también es la primera serie TV de Gainax que no es co-producción con otro estudio.
Cuando se estaba emitiendo Top wo Nerae 2! Diebuster (トップをねらえ2!), se realizó un concurso de diseño de personajes (Topless), los dos diseños ganadores serían adaptados por Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (貞本 義行) y aparecerían en la OVA final piloteando un Buster Machine.

Para el proyecto del 50 aniversario de Ashita no Joe (あしたのジョー), You Moriyama (森山 洋) y su staff tuvieron algunas ideas, una muy interesante es que pensaron en hacer una serie centrada en Rikishi Tooru. You Moriyama presentó su Concept Art en la expo de 2018.
