Finally watched Lars Von Trier's 1991 EUROPA (aka 'Zentropa'). Sin City meets Eraserhead - none of these images are promo art, they're all frames from the movie. Rear projection sorcery. It's on HBO Max, get into it if you want to nurse a bad, anxious mood 🕚

Most of the super stylized "hey, maybe I could make comics too" guys we were inspired by in high school (Frank Miller and Mike Mignola especially) tend to have narrative conventions that're pretty easy to ape. I bet we could all write decent, passable Hellboy or Sin City story.

But Paul Grist's work is so conceptially dense and narratively complex that it's basically impossible to fake- like, these pages are all from the same comic, JACK STAFF. I've been trying to get my head around it for years, with LAVENDER JACK (no relation) being my latest attempt.

I tried doing LAVENDER JACK in the storytelling styles of: 🥃 SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR era Frank Miller ~and~ ⚰️HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL era Mike Mignola (which is harder than it looks)

Despite the specific Miller and Mignola eras I'm trying to ape here, my actual favorite Sin City and Hellboy stories are FAMILY VALUES and CONQUEROR WORM, respectively https://t.co/9QwqFDhU38
