It never cease to amaze me just how faithful the layout/framing of the completed shots in Otomo's AKIRA are to his storyboard drawings - in his mind he has a crazy solid idea of how things should look. Explore more in my review - https://t.co/C03vOCTJmf #大友全集 #絵コンテ
"That's Mr. Kaneda to you, punk !" Katsuhiro Otomo's meticulously drawn storyboards for his magnum opus anime film AKIRA is now collected on 2 volumes from the new Complete Works. Explore more in my reviews 大友克洋全集 #絵コンテ レビュー - https://t.co/C03vOCTJmf
One of the many outstanding shots in the film that utterly astounds me still; Kaneda pulling off the bright yellow cover sheet off his bike, the billowing fabric so well animated you can feel the smoothness of the material as it rolled off the bike. 😍
Katsuya Terada, master of rakugaki ( doodles ). These are from his 2021 art book simply titled "Sketch" 寺田克也 スケッチ&ドローイング集 - https://t.co/EGA8MMy9kV #artbook #illustration #blauereview #落書き
The cross-hatching style seen in these pieces bear the unmistakable influence of the late French comic artist Moebius, but I love how Terada has adopted the technique to create a distinct look in much the same way as artists like Otomo & Yukito Kishiro ( Battle Angel Alita )
Otomo's insanely strong cinematic vision is manifestly clear when you look at how tight his storyboard drawings compare to the finished shots in the film. The storyboard books are a veritable treasure trove on how he composed his shots - https://t.co/5gApwv3uW6
One of the most unintentionally funny Amazon reviews I've ever read was one left for the Ghost In The Shell genga/layout book (2014), where the reviewer commented that it was a "half-a**ed coloring book, most of the drawings are incomplete" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 - https://t.co/4rXLLv7bUm
Heads up - a 650 pages whopper of an art book will be released on Dec 2nd collecting layouts+genga from Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA, as part of Complete Works. This new book will be like a jumbo edition of the Akira Animation Archives (2002 - image below) - https://t.co/qqLsxpNF0n
One of the many reasons why Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga is so visually impactful is because of the cinematic framing & composition. Otomo is as much a film director/cinematographer as he is a manga artist - https://t.co/tIhqt3L6gY
Not entirely convinced the storyboards that Otomo drew for Akira are detailed enough, I mean look at this shoddy work... 🤣😂 Just teasing of course ! My review for the storyboard book ( Vol 1 ) is almost done. You can also just grab a copy here - https://t.co/JZIKUt83AV
My treasured ( and very yellowed out ) Akira storyboard books, first published back in 1988. Every frame is a work of art. Also, Kodansha should really consider a reprint of these as they would still sell like hotcakes アキラ絵コンテ集 - https://t.co/ipIjvRp1zO #anime #animation
ICYMI - A whole book dedicated to the detailed concept art sketches by Mitsuo Iso ( Denno Coil ) for anime films like Ghost In The Shell, Magnetic Rose, Roujin Z, Evangelion, MS Gundam & more. See more in my review - https://t.co/EDV5W53Gmu
Hayao Miyazaki's self caricature as a pig riding in a stylish 3 wheeler (L), based on a photo taken by his late mentor, the veteran animator Yasuo Otsuka in 1993 (R). This illustration appeared in the Feb 94 issue of NAVI magazine.
