Cyndaquil's respiratory and digestive system are interlinked. Air is exhaled through four respiratory orifices along its back, mixing with copious digestive gases. Each orifice has rough specialized tissue that grinds together to produce sparks and ignite the flammable mixture.

Unlike other Pokémon species, which experience sudden and conspicuous biological changes during evolution, Larvitar retain much of their physiology. Their new anatomy layers on top of older body parts, rather than undergoing total metamorphosis.
