@gwenckatz Not all ukiyo-e artists focused on birds since bird art was a specific discipline originating in traditional Chinese formalization and tropes, but Hiroshige took it and ran with it so masterfully. His kingfisher dive is simply superb. 1

I watched a tutorial on how to make a golden rectangle and circles. 1:1.618 proportions are easy to do in Illustrator, so it's really simple to set up. Did a couple bird logos using the golden ratio. 1

I watched a couple Illustrator tutorials yesterday since I know the vector tools but don't know that app well. My god shape builder is so awesome. Also much easier to stroke lines with interesting brushes. 1

A great thing about vector art is you can do serious adjustments and still have nice clean lines at the end. 1

(More illos) Shepard was following in the footsteps of Tenniel to the point of Shepard taking over as illustrator for Punch and you can see a continuity in the style. Tenniel's Alice in Wonderland illustrations are most remembered now but his work was extensive and also amazing. 4

I re-read Graeme's Wind in the Willows a little while back, the version E H Shepard illustrated. It's a great book by itself but those illustrations are genuinely fantastic. 4
