learning theory and doing exercises to apply said theories. then doing it over and over again TT ive been doing these comp sketches originally to help with the class but its slowly becoming a habit -- i would see cool art, photos, etc. and i have this itch to sketch the comp
something that has helped me tremendously in improving my compositions is doing lots of comp sketches. i would recommend this only after you understand composition basics (theres tons of stuff online that can teach it way better than i do)
