Animation art from Disney's PETE'S DRAGON (1977). One of the first films I ever saw, circa 1980. The Gogans always remind me of Fratellis from THE GOONIES (what a sentence to write). I thought they were really scary-sinister. My nightmare world was populated by Disney villains.

Judging by John Mollo's sketch, Garindan was originally designed to be much shorter (top row, second character from left). (In Alan Dean Foster's novelization the character is described as a small creature, like a scurrying rat, not unlike a Jawa).

Models for Mickey & Minnie Mouse by (I'm assuming) Floyd Gottfredson. I've always liked the elegant and expressive designs of 1950s Mickey-as with Barks's Donald Duck, the comic version of Mickey was a very different character, both in looks and personality, than the cartoon one.

By the way. Left: illustration from NATE THE GREAT GOES UNDERCOVER (1978) by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Marc Simont. Right: Emily the Strange (1991). (I came across this as I was looking for Marc Simont illustrations.)

The wonderful Winged Monkeys of Oz. In THE WIZ (1978), where they were called Flying Monkeys, they appeared as a sinister motorcycle gang. 2 and 3 are illustrations by W.W. Denslow for the first edition of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ (1900). Next up, the Monkeys in the 1939 movie.

More slightly peculiar STAR WARS music. Artoo as a jazz drummer-that's a first. That's definitely a first. And, I'm guessing, a last.

Ghosts, ghouls and other scary stuff from Fleischer's Popeye cartoons. Mostly SHIVER ME TIMBERS, plus GHOSKS IS THE BUNK. Unlike their Betty Boop cartoons, Fleischer's Popeye shorts didn't feature much surreal horror.
