She bought the relatively modest property to get away from the madness surrounding her, but of course the madness followed her and turned sleepy Saint-Tropez into a jet set hotspot. She still lives there as of today and has declared the house will become a museum after her death.

Yesterday I mentioned the Brigitte Bardot song, "La Madrague". The melancholic tune was inspired by her house in St. Tropez, an old fisherman's shack with a boathouse, which she bought in 1959. This week I'll feature photos of it, like these, taken by Georges Dudognon in 1965.

MIGRAINE BOY by American cartoonist, Greg Fiering. The character appears on the inside sleeve of R.E.M.'s MONSTER (1994). The 1990s: when "alternative" bands would always follow up a moody and melodic (and successful) album with one that was loud and harsh and UNCOMMERCIAL.

ILM artist John Dykstra with a Darth Vader costume concept circa 1975. Plus some design sketches by Ralph McQuarrie. My aunt thought Darth Vader was genuinely terrifying. Not in a "scary villain from a children's movie" kind of way-for some reason Vader really disturbed her.

(That third image also features the only known (well, sort of) depiction of Kirby's concept design, as this first image, unfortunately, is a fake, based on image 2.)

Vintage matchbox labels featuring the Devil. In Dutch, matches are called "lucifers". I never really thought about that as a kid, but now, after all these years, I go-Oh wait.

Concept art by Warren Davis and Jeff Lee for 1982 arcade game, Q*BERT. (And the cover.) In the 80s, in the area where I lived, there was one computer store. It was called "The Computer". I saw my first Apple machine there: the Apple III, which was displayed behind glass.

Bluto (Brutus), according to E.C. Segar's assistant Bud Sagendorf, was inspired by British actor Eric Campbell (1890-1917), who played the recurring "big brute" character in many Chaplin shorts. Another influence is said to be Tyrone Power's Red Flack, from THE BIG TRAIL (1930).
